    To bicyclists in Bloomington, Indiana:

First of all, thank you for helping our environment by reducing your use of greenhouse gases by using a bicycle as your choice of commuting within campus.

That being said, you guys need to understand that the rules of the road apply to you if you are on the road. At stop signs, you should stop or at least “roll-stop” like cars. At red lights, you should completely stop. If you are on a sidewalk, don’t just cross the cross-walk/crossing area because you are a bike or a person. Be smart.

If you don’t agree with me, understand that it is a state law anyway (see IC-9-21-11-2). Yes laws will be broken but this is one that not only is important but could save your life. All the time I see bicyclists running down 2nd street and blowing right through the Jordan Ave. intersection on a red light. What if a car were to nail you and send you flying down Jordan Ave.? I just want you guys to be safe.

On another note, if you are RIGHT next to a cross-walk or crossing area, use it! Don’t go around it or try and take a shortcut. Just walk the ten extra feet down the street and cross over there!

    Thanks for your time,

It’s not just bicyclists who need to be safe. As a motorist I would be terrified to get myself into a situation where someone essentially rode his or her bike into my car and have to fend off litigation.
